# Charge fluctuations, CDW proximity and pairing

Separate static competition, coexistence and candidate charge-assisted pairing; distinguish charge density waves from modulated pair fields.

## Scope

Charge fluctuations at finite wave vector are a candidate contribution to a superconducting pairing interaction. Three observations must stay distinct: a static charge density wave (CDW) can compete with superconductivity; two orders can coexist; and dynamic charge fluctuations can contribute to pairing in a specified model. Neither coexistence nor a nearby superconducting dome alone establishes the third claim.

Castellani, Di Castro and Grilli studied quasiparticle scattering near charge instabilities in an infinite-U Hubbard–Holstein model. Their abstract distinguishes a zero-momentum singularity without long-range Coulomb forces from a finite-momentum singularity when those forces are included. This model context does not turn bare Coulomb repulsion into universal attraction. Only its publisher abstract was checked here; the original calculation has not been reproduced. [R1](#ref-source-74169f2f9bc31219)

## Mathematical assumptions

An independent Gaussian illustration makes one sign convention explicit. For a real normalized mode $\phi$, density source $n$, positive static susceptibility $\chi$ and real coupling $g$, take an energy $F=\phi^2/(2\chi)+gn\phi$. Completing the square, or integrating the Gaussian, gives

$$F_{\mathrm{eff}}(n)-F_{\mathrm{eff}}(0)=-\frac{g^2\chi}{2}n^2.$$

With dimensionless $\phi,n$, $g$ has energy units and $\chi$ inverse-energy units. Three numerical integrals independently recover this shift in normalized units. This result concerns an already specified bosonic mode. A real material requires screened vertices, momentum and frequency dependence, and any residual Coulomb terms; double counting the same charge response as two separate interactions is not justified.

A two-patch illustration absorbs density-of-states weights into dimensionless interactions $u$ within each patch and $v$ between patches. For equal weights, the linearized pairing matrix is $K=-\begin{pmatrix}u&v\\v&u\end{pmatrix}$. The equal-sign and opposite-sign eigenvalues are $-u-v$ and $-u+v$. Attractive interpatch $v<0$ favors equal signs in this simplified space; repulsive $v>0$ favors opposite signs. Four independent Rayleigh-quotient searches verify the ordering, including a case where neither eigenvalue is positive. Finite-Q scattering alone therefore does not fix a gap symmetry. Frequency cutoffs, self-energy and a full Fermi surface are absent here.

Static competition is another problem. Let $x=|\Delta|^2$ and $y=|\rho|^2$ be nonnegative, dimensionless squared superconducting and CDW amplitudes, with

$$F=a_sx+\frac{b_s}{2}x^2+a_cy+\frac{b_c}{2}y^2+\gamma xy.$$

All coefficients have energy-density units. Assume $b_s,b_c>0$ and $\gamma>-\sqrt{b_sb_c}$ so the quartic form is bounded on the physical quadrant. A stable interior mixed minimum additionally needs $b_sb_c-\gamma^2>0$ and positive solutions of the two stationarity equations. Otherwise boundary minima must be compared. Positive $\gamma$ penalizes simultaneous amplitudes but can still allow coexistence. Four independent grid minimizations check mixed and boundary cases. This equilibrium model neither supplies a retarded pairing interaction nor predicts a material transition temperature.

## Experimental criteria

Ghiringhelli and colleagues used resonant soft x-ray scattering on underdoped Y/Nd barium cuprates. Selected manuscript passages resolve a near-zero-loss charge feature from larger-loss excitations and separate planar from chain contributions. The reported instrumental energy resolution is approximately 130 meV; the authors infer an upper energy bound of 20 meV for the CDW contribution. That bound is not a resolved pairing-boson peak. Increasing charge correlations toward the superconducting transition and their subsequent weakening support competition within the measured samples. [R2](#ref-source-9ae65971bc3eb5b8)

Chang and colleagues studied a detwinned YBa2Cu3O6.67 crystal with 100 keV x-rays and fields up to 17 T. Its stated superconducting transition is 67 K, while charge modulation appears around 135 K. The selected manuscript reports charge order already at zero field; field enhancement below the superconducting transition accompanies suppression of superconductivity. Those two temperatures describe different phenomena, and diffraction intensity alone does not measure the Cooper-pairing vertex. [R3](#ref-source-c4a9d4e1b52d95bb)

For a pairing-mechanism claim, require the dynamic response over a stated momentum/energy window, the electron–mode vertex and screening convention, and a calculation that tests competing channels. Compare the same model against normal self-energy, gap structure and transition behavior on matched samples. Background subtraction, energy resolution, disorder, field orientation and tuning protocol must remain attached to experimental claims.

## Limits and disputes

Kusmartseva and colleagues report pressure-induced superconductivity in pristine 1T-TiSe2. Their abstract describes a superconducting region between approximately 2 and 4 GPa and cautions that pressure and copper intercalation can produce different electronic states. The full measurement protocol is not audited here, so this entry does not create a sample-specific transition record. A dome near CDW suppression is evidence of a relationship to investigate, not a unique mechanism assignment. [R4](#ref-source-f6bc08f968c20221)

Ortiz and colleagues' CsV3Sb5 discovery paper is Physical Review Letters 125, 247002. Its abstract combines bulk superconductivity with normal-state topological-band evidence and a higher-temperature CDW-like instability. This does not establish topological superconductivity, a particular gap sign or charge-mediated pairing. The inherited citation to Physical Review Materials 4, 121801 actually identifies an Osada praseodymium-nickelate paper; the public bibliography is corrected while the original source file is preserved. [R5](#ref-source-d49026ec4f5a10a4)

A pair density wave (PDW) modulates a pair field rather than simply the charge density. For coherent components $\Delta_+e^{iQx}+\Delta_-e^{-iQx}$, the $2Q$ Fourier coefficient of the squared amplitude is $\Delta_+\Delta_-^*$. Three direct Fourier checks include the single-component counterexample, where that coefficient vanishes. Berg and colleagues describe a symmetry-allowed coupling $\rho_{-2Q}\Delta_-^*\Delta_++\mathrm{c.c.}$; its coefficient can vanish at exact particle–hole symmetry. Charge order alone does not imply PDW order. Pair-sensitive measurements and phase/alternative-signal controls remain necessary. [R6](#ref-source-29221bdd51fec9f6)

## Discovery implications

Use CDW proximity to select competing hypotheses and measurements, not to label a mechanism prematurely. Require independent CDW evidence before including PdTe2 or beta-Bi2Pd as charge-mediated candidates. Likewise, a high-temperature resistive onset in a pressure-quenched cuprate cannot establish CDW causation without additional measurements. Keep lattice, spin, charge and multiband explanations available until their quantitative predictions are tested. The calculations above illustrate inference limits; the remaining final-version, raw-data and full scientific audits stay open.
