Abstract
We point out simple and model-independent tests of proposals that excitonic condensate formation is important for high-Tc superconductors. Elementary calculations predict the features of sharp infrared spectra, and we discuss novel features of the superconducting phase transition. We present evidence for excitonic level transitions in the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−y, showing a Rydberg spectrum fit to sharp infrared structure in the y=0.1 superconducting composition in the normal state that is absent in the y=0.8 nonsuperconducting phase.
