Abstract
To clarify the microscopic character of the superconducting proximity effect, we investigate some model systems with the rigorous analyses of the Green’s function. The general integral kernel of the Gorkov equation is obtained, which connects the clean and the dirty limit. Based on this integral kernel, the correct boundary condition of the pair potential is established in the frame of the one-frequency approximation. The proximity effect is found to be governed by the transmission coefficient of the Cooper pair across the boundary which is determined by the Fermi velocity ratio and the elastic scattering time. The decay length of the pair potential in the normal material is in proportion to the thermal diffusion length in the dirty limit, but changes to the quantity in proportion to the Pippard’s characteristic length in the clean limit. The experimentally observed decay length is discussed by means of the present theory.
