Abstract
Using generalized Ginzburg-Landau equations, we discuss the possibility that the high-Tc superconductors do not have a scalar, but a tensor order parameter. We propose experiments to distinguish between these two possibilities both with lattice anisotropy included. A tensor order parameter implies a splitting of the upper critical field for a given setup as well as the appearance of a transverse magnetic field, when a field is applied parallel to the crystal cell axes. Only for a single scalar is the product of coherence and penetration lengths an invariant along the cell axes.
