Abstract

Near the Cu2+ → Cu+ valence instability, there are low-lying excitations in the extended Hubbard model for CuO2 superconductors which consist of spatially extended, contiguous strings of Cu+-O− pairs. Such strings can be electrically neutral or carry charges +e or −e. Results for the string band structure, their internal excitations, and possible attractive string-pairing interactions are presented. Important experimental implications are discussed.
