Abstract

We have studied the electronic properties of YBa2Cu3O7 and EuBa2Cu3O7 superconductors with soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at BESSY. Electronic transitions to unoccupied states (holes) of 2p and 3d character on O and Cu, respectively, are found in superconducting specimens. In samples with reduced oxygen content, superconductivity is suppressed, and a decrease in the intensity of transitions to these unoccupied states is observed. However, there is little change in these features when Zn sufficient to suppress superconductivity is substituted for Cu. We conclude that O 2p and Cu 3d holes are necessary but not sufficient for superconductivity.
