Abstract

The same mean-field theory for an array of Josephson junctions that describes the onset of superconductivity at normal-state resistance RN(c) yields Ic, the maximum zero-voltage current for RN<RN(c). Fluctuations of the common Cooper-pair phase of the large number of electrons on each grain substantially reduce Ic. The predicted universal behavior of Ic, as a function of RN/RN(c), provides a further test of the theory of quantum fluctuations.
