Abstract

Microwave absorption spectra have been observed at 9.3 GHz from a superconducting lead sphere. The main signal, which moves to lower fields and decreases in width as the temperature is raised, is associated with the intermediate state. Changes in the position, shape, and reversibility of the spectrum with higher modulation fields indicate sample heating, while a spectrum of sharp spikes observed just below Tc is associated with thermal instabilities. Some nonreversible features of the spectra are attributed to surface hysteresis.
