Abstract

The electric-quadrupole interactions at the Eu site in a high-Tc superconductor EuBa2Cu3O7−x have been studied at 4.2 and 300 K with Eu151 Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is found that the quadrupole coupling constant is small and negative at both temperatures. This is at variance with the theoretical predictions published in the literature, which are based on calculations of the electric-field-gradient tensor using a point-charge model. The reasons for the failure of such calculations applied to various high-Tc superconductors published in the literature are discussed.
