Abstract

A three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic structure is identified in (Ca0.85Sr0.15)CuO2, a prototypical parent compound of all high-Tc superconductors. Magnetic neutron scattering and a weak susceptibility anomaly give TN=537±5 K while χ(T) suggests magnetic fluctuations above TN in common with La2−xSrxCuO4−y and YBa2Cu3O7−δ. Both experiments are consistent with a crossover from large intraplanar spin-spin correlations at high T to a 3D ground state driven by very weak out-of-plane couplings between Cu2+ ions.
