Abstract
Using a canonical transformation defined in terms of Hubbard operators we derive an effective one-band Hamiltonian for the copper oxide superconductors. The model we use takes into account explicitly both copper and oxygen orbitals. The Hamiltonian is shown to be somewhat different from the single-band Hubbard Hamiltonian in the strong interaction limit. We suggest that extra terms that appear in our effective Hamiltonian may support superconductivity for large values Ed (a difference between copper and oxygen energy levels).
