Abstract

We report the results of picosecond transient-thermoreflectance (TTR) studies of single-crystal La2CuO4 measured over the temperature range 80–300 K. Whereas a strong thermal signal is observed for light polarized parallel to the Cu-O planes (E⊥c^), very little thermal signal is obtained for the orthogonal polarization (E∥c^). Nonequilibrium heating, in which the local temperatures of the thermalized carriers exceeds the temperature of the lattice was found to occur on a picosecond time scale. The temperature dependence of the E⊥c^ TTR signal is not well understood, but may correlate with recent thermal-conductivity measurements on a similar sample.
