Abstract

A hypothetical transition-metal superconductor having a narrow d band and a sublattice of filled-shell negative ions is studied. The transverse collective vibrations of the last-filled negative-ion shells (e.g., L shells for O2− or M shells for S2−) are invoked to mediate an interaction between the Bloch states of a nearly localized d band. The coupling constant λc that determines the critical temperature is surprisingly large. Tc∼w exp[-1/(λc-μ)], where w is the d-band width and μ is the unreduced Coulomb parameter (i.e., not μ*). The explicit expression for λc provides guidelines for selection of potential superconducting compounds.
