Abstract

The critical current of a thin-film superconductor due to velocity depairing is computed in the Eliashberg formalism with an aim at understanding the role of strong inelastic scattering. The effect of both ordinary and paramagnetic impurities is considered. An approximate strong-coupling correction formula is derived for the slope of the critical current (jc) at Tc and the asymptotic regime, where the electron-phonon interaction becomes very large, is considered. An absolute maximum value of the slope of jc at Tc, valid for any spectral density, is calculated.
