Abstract
Recent experiments on the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc of ZrxNi100−x glasses have revealed that the pressure derivative of Tc is positive for x greater than 60 and negative for x less than 60. In order to see whether this behavior can be explained entirely on the basis of pressure-induced changes in the electronic structure, we have carried out some standard linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) and coherent-potential-approximation calculations. These reveal a decrease in the electronic density of states at the Fermi level for all x in the range 50≤x≤75 suggesting a decrease in the BCS electron-phonon coupling parameter with increasing pressure for all compositions in the above range. We explore possible reasons as to why the large-x compositions should exhibit a positive ∂Tc/∂P and suggest experiments that can shed light on this issue. It is concluded that the suppression of spin fluctuations with the increase in pressure plays an important role in deciding the pressure dependence of Tc in these alloys.
