Abstract
Hysteresis losses W have been calculated as a function of temperature T, bias field Hb, and amplitude h0 for planar geometry in the critical-state framework with jc=α(T)/Bn for n=0, 1/2, and 1 in the range Hb/h0≲2. χmax, the maximum of the ac susceptibility, χac=W/πμ0h02 versus T/Tc for various h0, Hb, and α(T) are seen to trace a ‘‘universal’’ ac-loss valley for each n with 0<n≤1 when plotted versus Hb/h0. $T sub max— corresponding to χmax graphed versus Hb/h0 has a peak whose position differs significantly from that of the minimum in the ac-loss valley. χac at the onset of full penetration, denoted χ*, and the corresponding T, denoted T*, are seen to deviate markedly from χmax and Tmax in all these circumstances.
