Abstract

A scanning tunneling microscope and an atomic-force microscope were used to study the surface structure of the bc plane of a κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 crystal. The individual bis(ethylene- dithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) molecules were resolved and dislocations and steps were observed. Structural height differences of the order of 0.1 Å with respect to the bc plane are observed between the cation molecules, giving rise to an electron density of states that is less isotropic than previously thought.
