Abstract
We propose an explanation for the existence of optical dichroism in superconductors as a manifestation of intrinsic properties of certain superconducting phases. We assume the superconducting-state quasiparticles are relaxed by multiple scattering against nonmagnetic impurities. We use a representative superconducting state where time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken. The contribution due to Bogoliubov quasiparticles turns out to be important and could provide an explanation to the experimental data obtained in certain high-Tc materials. We predict that the effect should be important in certain heavy-electron materials.
