Abstract
We study decay of metastable states of quantum vortices. Such metastable states arise in superconductors either due to their layered structure or due to trapping by defects (or both). We give a general expression for the lifetime of a metastable state and investigate it in more detail near the crossover temperature between classical and quantum regimes. We show in the general case that the prefactor in the expression for the lifetime diverges logarithmically at large momenta and we discuss the way to eliminate this divergence. We also derive explicit expressions for several specific and well-used potentials.
