Abstract
Solving the Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations for a one-dimensional mesoscopic superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor junction at zero temperature, we show that the interference of particles within the normal-metal region drastically alters the behavior of the critical current through the junction. As a function of the normal-metal carrier density, this interference yields striking resonances in the critical current corresponding to the Fabry-Perot interference criteria. The origin and nature of these resonances are analyzed in detail. Their functional form differs markedly from those found in nonsuperconducting mesoscopic structures. We note that the resultant behavior has the potential for interesting device properties.
