Abstract

The saturation magnetization loops of Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO3.98 n-type superconducting powder have been measured at different temperatures. The paramagnetic susceptibility χpara is about 3×10−3. The superconducting component is fitted by an extended critical-state model, so that the lower critical field, Hc1, and the first field for vortex entry, H1, are determined. Their overall behavior is similar to those of p-type Bi-based compounds; Hc1(T) is almost linear and surface barriers appear below 12 K, above which anomalies occur. A unique feature is that at 18 K (≊Tc) although the superconducting magnetization becomes very small Hc1 is still large (2 kA/m). This indicates the presence of minor phases with much higher Tc. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
