Abstract
In the class of intermetallic compounds of general formula (RC)m(TB)n (R= rare earth, T= transition metal), superconductivity has been reported in several of the single RC layer (m=1 and n=2) compounds, but only in one two-layer (m=2, n=2) system [LuNi1−x(Cu/V)xBC]. We report here the observation of superconductivity in a further two-layer compound YNi1−xCuxBC with Tc as high as 8.9 K. The corresponding LuNi1−xCuxBC system shows an enhancement of Tc up to 6.4 K upon Cu substitution. The principal structural effect of substitution in both systems is an expansion of the tetragonal lattice along the c axis. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
