Abstract
The quasiparticle bound states that occur at the surfaces of high-Tc superconductors are of interest because they are sensitive to the symmetry of the order parameter. This paper notes a surprising feature of the associated zero-bias conductance peak observed in tunneling experiments: its width is independent of various scattering processes (due to impurities or surface roughness). This universal width can be explained in terms of a momentum-dependent width for the zero-energy surface bound states that are formed at the surface. In addition, at a rough surface only grazing incidence quasiparticles can form surface bound states, and the dominant process limiting the lifetime of these surface bound states is a surface umklapp scattering process. These ideas have significant consequences for the properties of surface bound states in a magnetic field, and also suggest a modification of the boundary conditions used in the popular quasiclassical theories.
