Abstract

When a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is situated a small distance from a thin superconducting film, an enhancement of vortex motion damping may occur. This enhanced damping is due to Eddy currents created in the 2DEG by the moving vortices. In this paper a detailed calculation of this enhanced vortex damping is performed for an isolated vortex and for vortices flowing in a channel. We calculate the magnitude of this damping both analytically and numerically, giving its dependence on film thickness, channel density and length, and superconductor-2DEG separation.
