Abstract

The Knight shift K of 51V and the magnetic susceptibility χ in the C15 Laves phase compound HfV2 have been measured to investigate the change in the electronic state at the martensitic lattice transformation temperature TL and the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. In the normal state, the hyperfine fields have been estimated to be -250 and −72kOe/μB above and below TL, respectively. The reduction in the magnitude of hyperfine field is considered to be due to a strong s-d mixing induced by the lattice transformation. Above TL the V 3d derived density of states N3d(ɛF) obtained from K and the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1T is comparable with that estimated by a band calculation. The Knight shift due to 3d spin vanishes well below the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Since the T5 dependence of 1/T1 well below Tc is explained by the anisotropic energy gap that has nodes at points on the Fermi surface, the Cooper pair is thought to be of Anderson-Brinkman-Morel dγ or dɛ wave, for example.
