Abstract

The electric-field induced ball formation has been observed for high temperature superconducting (HTSC) powders in an ac field of low frequency. Different from a static electric field, the HTSC particles in the ac field first form chains along the field direction if the electric field is below a critical value, Ec1. As soon as the electric field exceeds Ec1, the chains are broken and the HTSC particles form balls. The ball size reduces with further increase of the electric field. Ec1, as a function of frequency, first drops from the value for the static electric field and then increases with the frequency. The ball-formation phenomenon comes from the interaction between Cooper pairs and the applied electric field. A positive surface energy associated with the induced surface charge distributions on superconductors is a possible explanation.
