Abstract

We have investigated Josephson vortex flow in intrinsic junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y. In addition to the Josephson radiation we find a strong broadband non-Josephson microwave emission which is not expected for conventional junctions. We explain this non-Josephson signal by Cherenkov radiation occurring when the vortex velocity exceeds the lowest of the N possible mode velocities for electromagnetic waves in an N junction stack.
