Abstract
A fundamental error in the derivation of the Josephson critical current has been detected. The corrected temperature dependence differs from the standard result, e.g., that of Ambegaokar and Baratoff. Spurious contributions to the coherent tunneling of pairs are identified; they arise when Gor'kov factorization is imposed on the ensemble average of the tunneling operator.
