Scope
The Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) framework describes vortex–antivortex unbinding in an appropriate two-dimensional phase system. The ideal short-range XY model has algebraically decaying correlations below the transition, rather than ordinary finite-temperature long-range order. Above it, free vortices destroy that quasi-long-range order. A resistance drop in a thin film does not by itself establish this mechanism. R1 R2
Charged superconducting films require a further qualification: magnetic screening changes the vortex interaction at sufficiently long distance. Kosterlitz and Thouless explicitly identified this limitation in their original paper. Effective BKT behavior can be relevant over experimentally accessible scales, but finite size, screening, interlayer coupling and spatial inhomogeneity must be assessed before transferring the infinite neutral-system result. R1 R3 R4
Mathematical assumptions
Define the sheet phase stiffness in energy units by . The universal jump uses the long-distance renormalized total stiffness, . A bare pairing calculation or finite-frequency inductive response is not automatically this quantity. In the local sheet convention, ; frequency, vortex dynamics and geometry enter its experimental interpretation. The jump does not separate conventional and geometric contributions. R1 R2 R4
For dimensionless and dilute vortex fugacity , one convention gives and . The Benfatto manuscript instead uses and ; its stiffness is expressed in temperature units. Keeping these factors prevents a spurious disagreement between equations. Two illustrative flows from and were checked at three step sizes, stopping at while . They illustrate proliferation versus suppression within a dilute approximation; they do not determine a material transition or justify continuation to strong fugacity. R2 R4
On the disordered side, an asymptotic resistance form is , with and nonuniversal . This is the near-transition limit, not the full Halperin–Nelson interpolation into the Gaussian fluctuation regime. If those parameters are temperature independent over the fit window, . Its linear extrapolation is a consistency test under those assumptions. Derivatives amplify measurement noise, and a temperature-dependent background changes the result. R3 R4
Experimental criteria
Compare the jump, nonlinear transport and resistance tail on the same sample and temperature scale, using independent observables where available. Report the measurement frequency, current interval, contact configuration, geometry and uncertainty. Agreement across probes strengthens a BKT interpretation; it is not a universal requirement that every experiment resolve all three ideal signatures. A broadened or unobserved jump needs a quantitative account of resolution, finite scales and inhomogeneity. R1 R2 R4
In the commonly used homogeneous vortex-transport regime, with gives at the ideal jump. This is a dynamical response relation with an applicable current window. Finite samples can recover an ohmic low-current response; heating and contact effects need separate checks. As a logical counterexample, dimensionless has a finite zero-current resistance but an apparent log–log slope of approximately between and . No phase transition is encoded in that example. R4
A second synthetic example tests the resistance diagnostic. For dimensionless temperature , the positive function has no finite-temperature transition. Yet is nearly linear on –: a local fit has and extrapolates to approximately . A visually impressive line over a narrow interval therefore does not identify a transition. This constructed example is not a diagnosis of any cited device. Fit-window stability and physically consistent parameters matter. R4
Xi and colleagues illustrate why temperature criteria must remain distinct. Their NbSe₂ author manuscript takes normal resistance at 8 K; the Aslamazov–Larkin fit temperature is close to the half-resistance temperature, while a BKT temperature inferred from current excitation is close to the one-percent-resistance criterion. The approximate 3 K monolayer AL-fit value must not be relabelled as a measured BKT temperature. The final supplement and raw nonlinear traces have not been audited here. Ye's gate-tuned MoS₂ dome provides another material context, but its checked institutional abstract alone does not verify BKT behavior. R5 R6
Limits and disputes
Pair formation, gap closing, resistive onset, phase coherence and an instrumental zero-resistance threshold can differ. A BKT interpretation addresses phase ordering and vortex physics; it does not identify the pairing interaction or gap symmetry. The accessible range of logarithmic vortex interactions and the crossover into amplitude fluctuations constrain how far a BKT fit can be extrapolated. Spatially varying stiffness and percolative transport deserve sample-specific comparison rather than automatic assignment to one mechanism. R1 R4 R5
This review covers selected original KT/NK passages, selected Benfatto and Xi author passages, and bounded local calculations. The original Halperin–Nelson full derivation, full author-to-journal comparisons, supplements and raw experimental data remain open. The selected Nelson–Kosterlitz text was not visually checked. Mathematical counterexamples and passing software tests do not complete scientific acceptance. R1 R2 R3 R4 R5 R6
Discovery implications
For thin-film screening, preserve the sample, density, thickness, field, current and frequency alongside each fitted or measured temperature. Compare stiffness with pairing indicators and test size or frequency dependence when possible. Improving a pairing scale need not improve phase coherence; conversely, a small stiffness does not by itself prove a BKT transition. Keep alternative interpretations and source-access limits visible in exported records. R1 R4 R5 R6
