Abstract

We examine the structural distortions associated with the lanthanum-based superconducting compounds using a theory due to Bilbro and MacMillan. This theory postulates the coexistence of a Peierls distortion and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state for superconductivity. A reasonably good fit between theory and experiment is obtained. We comment on the implications of our results to current theories of high-Tc superconductivity.
