Abstract

We have measured a large magnetoresistance below a temperature of 35 K in a La2−xSrxCuO4 (x=0.1) sample, which shows no zero-resistance state and has a resistivity following the Mott hopping law at low temperatures. A magnetoresistance of comparable magnitude is seen below 38 K in high-Tc (x=0.2 and 0.25) samples. These observations suggest that the magnetoresistance detects superconducting islands in the x=0.1 sample, and that the main difference as Sr concentration varies is a change in the connectivity of the superconducting network rather than in its intrinsic occurrence. At the same time, the thermopower decreases as temperature decreases with no detectable anomaly.
