Abstract

The heat capacity Cp of YBa2Cu3O7 has been measured from 1.4 to 6 K. Some samples exhibit a heat-capacity anomaly of the Schottky type while others show no anomaly. Chemical analysis of the samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy reveals the presence of heavy rare-earth-ion impurities, with the Schottky anomaly being attributed to the dysprosium ion. The source of the impurities is the Y2O3 starting material.
