Abstract

We have synthesized nearly single-phase [(Gd1−xLax)1/2Ba1/3Ce16]8CU6Oz (x=0, (1/3, (1/2) and single-phase [La1/6Gd1/3(Ba1−ySry)1/3Ce1/6]8Cu6Oz (y=(1/4, (1/2). The x-ray-diffraction patterns were successfully indexed for tetragonal unit cells of approximately the same dimension with the lattice parameters of a=3.830–3.858 Å and c=28.298–28.489 Å. (La1/6Gd1/3Ba1/6Sr1/6Ce1/6)8CU6O18.83, which was annealed at a high oxygen pressure of P(O2)=200 atm, exhibited a metallic temperature dependence of resistivity, and a very sharp superconducting transition at Tcon=39 K (TcR=0=36 K). The Meissner signal at 10 K of this sample was about 35% of the perfect diamagnet.
