Abstract

We show that the hitherto puzzling in-plane thermopower of YBa2Cu3O7−y and other high-Tc superconductors can be understood in terms of existing metallic-diffusion thermopower theory: The observed behavior is similar to that already seen in ordinary metallic alloys, except for the anomalously large size of the electron-phonon enhancement effect. The data are therefore consistent with a very large electron-phonon coupling for some carriers (arising, for example, from anharmonic phonons associated with structural instabilities). The measured out-of-plane thermopower in several single crystals is also consistent with our model, but with a smaller electron-phonon coupling.
