Abstract
We show that the gauge-invariant electromagnetic response of a clean anisotropic superconductor may be expressed quite simply in terms of the analogous system without long-range Coulomb interactions. The primary deviations from the usual BCS calculation of the transverse-current response are found to correspond, in the case of conventional superconductors, to the backflow of single-particle excitations, while in unconventional superconductors contributions from optical order-parameter collective modes appear as well. As an example, we calculate the influence of backflow terms in the current on the penetration depth and the inductive skin depth in a layered conventional superconductor as a function of angle with respect to the c axis.
