Abstract

We observed nonhysteretic Josephson currents in the I-V characteristics of break junctions made at 4.2 K in single crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. The I(V) curves, measured at different temperatures up to Tc, are correctly fitted by the resistively shunted junction model if the effect of the thermal fluctuations is included. The temperature dependence of the Josephson critical current Ic(T) deviates massively from the ideal BCS behavior but is fitted very well by a model that takes into account the intrinsic effect of a depressed order parameter at the surface of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x.
