Abstract

In the hope of demonstrating the influence of a spin gap on the transport properties in underdoped cuprates, it has been suggested that the opening of a spin gap at Ts may correlate with a change at TD in the slope of the a-axis resistivity versus temperature observed in a YBa2Cu4O8 crystal. Comparison of ρa in YBa2Cu4O8 with ρa in a fully oxygenated, twin-free YBa2Cu3O7−δ crystal leads to the conclusion that TD has little to do with the opening of a spin gap, but it might be correlated with a change in the c-axis coupling in YBa2Cu4O8 and YBa2Cu3O7−δ. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
