Abstract

The tunneling conductance when quasiparticles are injected from a quantum point contact into a superconductor is calculated. The zero-bias conductance peak due to midgap states in d-wave superconductors is removed because of the quantum-mechanical diffraction of the electron wave by the narrow opening. Moreover, the zero-bias conductance vanishes even when the interface barrier between the normal metal and the superconductor is absent, except when the point contact is aligned along the (100) axis of the superconductor. These observations indicate that the tip condition of a scanning tunneling microscope significantly influences the tunneling spectrum.
