Abstract
The second peak in the magnetization (fishtail) of superconducting single crystals was investigated for magnetic fields parallel to the crystallographic c axis. Several RBa2Cu3O7−δ crystals and one Y2Ba4Cu8O16 crystal were studied by various experimental techniques. We observe a similar behavior of the fishtail effect independent of the initial state of our samples. In order to assess the dependence of the fishtail on the defect size and concentration, the defect structure was modified by reactor neutron irradiation and additional annealing treatments. Our results emphasize the important role of normal conducting regions, which are created by clustering of defects, typically of oxygen vacancies. Evidence in favor of strong pinning is presented.
