Abstract

Measurements of thermopower versus temperature under hydrostatic pressure are reported for La2−xSrxCuO4 having no charge reservoir and the underdoped YBa2Cu3O7−δ, which we demonstrate to have a pressure-induced electron transfer from the CuO2 sheets to the Cu(1)O1−δ reservoir planes. The CuO2 sheets exhibit a thermopower α(T)=α0+δα(T) in which α≈α0 at room temperature decreases with increasing hole concentration, and δα(T) is an enhancement having a maximum at Tmax=100–140 K. Correlation between dTc/dP and d(δα)/dP are discussed.
