Abstract

Electrical, magnetic, and crystallographic measurements have been carried out for lanthanum-and oxygen-deficient La2−xCuO4−δ samples prepared at various sintering temperatures and cooling rates in air, oxygen, or argon, in order to check the systematic variation of filamentary superconductivity and normal-state electrical resistivity with lanthanum and oxygen content. Correlation between physical properties and the oxygen stoichiometric parameter δ clearly indicates the crucial role of oxygen in the superconducting properties of this system. On the other hand, lanthanum deficiency has little effect on superconductivity.
