Abstract

"Tetragonal," superconductive La2CuO4+δ has been synthesized at 800°C and 23 kbar under a high oxygen pressure. A first-order phase change to the orthorhombic, antiferromagnetic state occurs with the loss of bulk oxygen; a continuous loss of superficial oxygen occurs through the transition. These data make it unnecessary to postulate the presence of interstitial bulk superoxide and indicate that any superoxide identified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is probably associated with superficial oxygen, not the bulk oxygen responsible for superconductivity.
