Abstract

Coulomb-blockade suppressed electron transport through tunnel junctions is a well-understood phenomenon. The complementary effect appears in Josephson point contacts due to the restricted horizon which equals the Compton wavelength of the Josephson junction. This leads to a strongly reduced critical current as well as a residual contact resistance due to quantum tunneling of the phase. When the lead capacitance becomes smaller than its natural unit e2/ℏc≈0.81 pF/m, the Josephson phase transforms into the Bloch lattice.
