Abstract
Superconductivity with a Tc as high as 25.5 K has been observed in Bi2Sr2CuO6 by partial substitution of Sr by La. Superconductivity is limited to a range of 10% to 38% substitution. In Bi2Sr2−xLaxCuO6+δ each La atom introduces one additional O atom into the crystal resulting in δ=x. Thereby one extra hole per substituted Sr atom is produced. We discuss the probable crystallographic site of the additional oxygen atoms with respect to the oxidation states of bismuth and copper in these compounds.
